<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll help Please!
Missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt, please re-install

As common as this problem is I have yet to come across anything that has actually worked.

I've tried... CHKDSK with the XP OS CD, it gets up to 75% then says can't be repaired - bootcfg /rebuild - expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\Windows\system32 and another similar with 'copy' instead of 'expand' - and even changed boot sequence. The only thing I haven't done is try to re-install for fear of losing all data.

Now what?

I I found this post on another web page thru Google - It worked for me......

HAL.DLL MISSING OR CORRUPT ERROR MESSAGE
If you get an error regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll file, it might simply be the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive that is misconfigured

Here's what to do:

Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
Take out the CD ROM and type exit

I had the same problem at work, what we did was the second repair option in the xp cd which installs XP over itself, that fixed the problem.

CCB056: I am curious to know, when you install over the current OS that you have installed without formatting and removing all the old files, did your OS still keep all your other files like My Docs/ My Pics etc?

by ccb056
yes, it did; and all the programs which were installed on the old os still worked

i setted up a computer for my grandfather who lives quite far away from me and i made it this way. c: -> msdos, for an old database program d: -> windows xp, for the whole stuff e: -> datas so. he had the same problem and he installed windows xp again not with the repair functions. neither with the R option nor with the reinstall. so he has what i think is quite strange to windows xp entries in the boot choice menu. the first is the one who leads to the hal.dll failure notice and the other one works. but now the data partition is mapped with the name d: i dont know the details yet but does anybody know what happened?

I know it sounds too simple, but believe me please....it works....I had to do this because I had a power failure and my computer did the same thing <windows root>\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt, please re-install I don't know why it worked but I tried everything that was posted here short of a complete install. All I want to do is help someone get their computer bootable again. I wouldn't just post something without doing it myself. My-Specs AMD 939-San Diego FX-64/Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition/3 Sony Serial ATA 250GB Raid-5 configuration/Sony DVD-DVR/1 GIG Muskin Special Enhanced 2-2-2 Ultra-Fast Memory/Two SLI-Geforce 6800 Ultra-OC 512 MB Video Cards/ DFI LanParty UT-DR MB/550 Watt PW/Two Samsung 21" 213T SyncMaster/Sound Blaster Pro Audigy 3 Soundcard/Logitech Cordless Keyboard If you guys do what I said previous it won't hurt anything.. If it works please post for other members...so everyone can benefit. Thanks guys, :D Update: Just to let you guys know I sent my fix to Microsoft earlier and I just checked my email and they stated that they re-created the Hal.Dll error message and did the process above and it was successful for them. I forgot to mention that subsequent to the fix above I did a FIXBOOT and FIXMBR process and I noted that to Microsoft. I don't know if they did that also. They said it will take about a week for it to get approved and tested for related conflicts and they will publish a procedure if it all works out. For now, use this procedure if all other options don't work. I'm using 64-Bit Windows, but I don't see it making a difference due to the base program being XP. My Build Version is 5.2.

help plz

k i did it step by step like you guys said, but there is another problem now. When i did bootcfg /rebuild it asked me if i want to add installation to the boot list, and i pressed yes. so when i did i accidently typed /exit for the first part and "m" for the second part(randomly lol, i know). and my question is does it effect anything? i mean if my OS Load Options says "m" when i type bootcfg /list, does it really matter? and if it does can i somehow remove it and to what should i name it too? please i need an answer ASAP.

I did the part where you type bootcfg /list and then bootcfg and /rebuild. However, it said that there weren't any boot entries. I proceeded to chkdsk to scan for problems and it came up that there are unrecoverable errors. I also tried to do a clean install of Windows XP and it came up that the CD was invalid. Are there any other solutions? Thank you! :)

Try cleaning the CD with a paper towel and windex, you may have a dirty CD. At what part of the install do you get the invalid CD?
