I have a Windows XP Toshiba laptop and lateley my CD burner has'nt been working. I tryed using three seperate programs so far (Windows Media Player, Drag'n Drop CD+DVD, and Realplayer) to burn audio tracks or data to a CD, but they haven't worked. Everytime I start up my computer I get a message that says something like "to enable DVD burning, you must disable CD burning. Would you like to disable this feature? (yes/no). I click no but CD burning still does not work. Same thing if I click yes. I get this message whenever I try to burn a CD too. I also tried using the control panel to disable DVD burning (Control panel\System\System Properties\Hardware\Device Manager\DVD/CD-ROM Drives\MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-811) by configuring the property, "device usage", to disable. This too was to no avail. Also now my CD drive isn’t working for some reason although my DVD drive still works. Can anybody help me out with this please?

Take the drive out physically, if it is still in device manager remove it, place it in a different slot, reinstall the drivers
run ad-aware and spybot
run windows updates
delete temp files

Lol, can you rephrase this in newbie language.
run ad-aware and spybot
run windows updates
delete temp files
no offence, but how would this help me?

You could have spyware installed on your system causing the errors
You could have some junk in your temp files causing the errors
There may be a problem with windows, and by updating you could fix the probelm
DO you know how to take the drive out of your laptop's slot an dplace it in another slot, usually the floppy and cd drive use the same type of slot, and you can switch the slot they use.

Well, it seems my system is up to date, I have no spyware, and my temp folder was already empty because my dad recently had to get the laptop fixed and all the data was erased about 4-5 weeks ago.

it could be that the drive just failed, sometimes hardware does that, if you could get another drive to test, then we would have more information to base a conclusion on

What would I do in case its a drive failure? It seemed to have been working fine yesterday, except for the CD burning. Now I can't run CDs at all.
I don't know if it helps but when I click on My Computer when I have a CD in I ge the message:
"D:\ is not accessible. The request could not be completed because of an I/O device error."

try booting from the cd, this will tell you if the error is caused by windows or hardware

I tryed booting from my Microsoft Office installation CD and nothing happened, does this mean I have a dead drive? The DVD part of the drive still works though. (its a combination drive)

The only Windows install disk I have is a DVD. Are there any other CDs that are bootable? Maybe an internet install CD?
I have a DVD/CD drive combination but DVDs still work. Is it possible for only the CD drive part to be dead?

yes it is possible because cds use a different laser than dvds
google for memtest86, burn the image to a cd, that is bootable and the software is free
