Help! hal.dll missing or corrupt-access to old installation?
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll help Please!
Missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
I had this error message when I restarted yesterday, and could not even access c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 through recovery console to attempt to copy the file over and replace it. I read the similar forum topic but that didnt help. I did a reinstall to a new windows directory, c:\windows2 -it works and obviously all personalizations were removed. However, I expected the old c:\windows directory to still be on my hard drive, but it was missing... I simply thought it would be possible to copy a new hal.dll through this new winxp install to the old c:\windows folder in windows, but the folder isnt there.<p>When I reboot, however, I now have two WinXP installations to choose from: the new one and the old one (which still wont load because its missing that hal.dll file). Accessing recovery console now only lets me log onto the new installation, and from there there is still no c:\windows directory. There is what appears to be a 'windows' file that does not have the <dir> attribute so I can't access it as a folder. However, the option to load this old installation is still available when I reboot, so I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to still salvage and fix this old install (still displays hal.dll missing/corrupt... message and reboots). Any suggestions? We all know how tedious and nerve-wracking it is to reinstall dozens of programs, reboot, reinstall reboot, customize, etc! Any help would be appreciated.
