Tried to add some memory -- BAD IDEA! -- Please Help!

Hi,
I thought I'd add some memory, but it seems as though I have really fouled things up. Any help would be much appreciated!
My system:
HP Pavilion 740n
Motherboard: ASUS
BIOS: ASUS AWARD
CPU: Pentium 4
Video Card: "On motherboard integrated into chipset"
OS: Windows XP
Two RAM slots
The Symptoms:
The computer powers on, but instead of one short beep, there is one long beep. The hard drive spools up, the CD and DVD drives open and close. The monitor is black, however. The one long beep recurs every 5 seconds or so.
What I did just before this started:
The computer came with 256k RAM (DIMM DDR SDRAM) and I wanted to add a 512K RAM chip in the empty slot. I popped it in, and the above symptoms started happening. I reseated the RAM several times -- no luck. I also tried it with just one RAM chip at a time -- still no luck. I also checked for anything that was obviously loose, but could not find anything.
This sounds like some probems where one can reseat the video card, but mine is integrated in the mobo.
Any ideas out there?
Thanks,
Eric L.
