missing hard drive after upgrade

CPU is the AMD that is the equivalent of pentium IV
RAM 256
was runnning win98SE and decided to upgrade to win2000pro
clean install
this computer is about 1.5 years old and I had
C - Primary master 40 gig
D - primary slave 1 gig
E - C/D RW
A - floppy
After I installed win2000pro, my D hard drive didn't show up
went to BIOS and told it to auto detect
That shows fine now
On the initial start up screen it shows both Hard drives
After I get cranked up, there is no second hard drive showing in the computer icon on the desk top.
