Outlook and AOL problems

Hey, my parents got AOL around 9 years ago in the internet dark ages, I can't stand having the program on my computer because of all the background programs that slow everything down. So I'm trying to use outlook instead. I configured outlook to work with AOL as per the directions I found on various sites. imap.aol.com - incoming smtp.aol.com - outgoing changed the outgoing server to 587. Problem is, I can't send mail, everytime I try to, I get the error message: 0x800CCC0F - Cannot send mail because of server interruption (or something like that, error number is exact). I'm running DSL through a modem/router combo provided by Verizon, Windows XP, and Sygate Personal Firewall. I don't know what the deal is, anyone have experience with this or an idea what to do?

Why are you useing AOL if you have Verizon? Try doing this .... Incoming mail (POP3) incoming.verizon.net Outgoing mail (SMTP) outgoing.verizon.net User name enter you're account name Password enter you're password set general tab pop.verizon.net
