can't renew ip address

I'm having problems with my modem/router/computer. I'm not sure which one it is though. Anyway, I've just switched from DSL to cable and it's been a few weeks now. I hadn't had any trouble with it until today. My brother came back from college this weekend and he hooked up the wireless router. Everything was working well. But then, today when he left and I unhooked the router (it's a Belkin wireless router and it doesn't exactly port forward too well . . . ) and used the modem alone, the internet no longer worked. The network couldn't find an IP Adress, so I tried repairing it but it was unable to renew the IP. When I had DSL it worked just fine when I switched between the two. Now, the only way the internet will work is if I connect through the router. But with the router connected certain programs can't work and I just don't like it. I'm hoping somebody can help me figure out what's wrong and help me fix it. My modem by the way is a Motorola sb5120 surfboard cable modem Thanks a lot.

I know how you feel but instead, connecting the modem directly to my computer works, if I connect my modem to the router and then the router to the computer it wont receive packets and wont let me renew the IP.

i had the same problem my resolution was: goto command prompt and type in ipconfig/release, and within 8 seconds unplug the ethernet or usb from your cable modem if you have any questions i can try to help you.  Make sure you don't have your router connected when you try this
