if i open the drive, put a CD in, and close the drive, the light on the drive blinks as if it were reading the disc. but the thing just keeps blinking. it never actually finishes reading the disc. and when i go to my computer, it doesnt even show that a disc is in the drive.
i checked Device Manager, and it says that the drive is working properly. problem is... it isn't working properly.
anyone have any ideas? the drive has been like this for the past 2 months. i can listen to CDs in the DVD drive, but i cant burn anything which is making me angry because i've got a lot of mixes i want to make. argh. argh. argh.

The drive might not be getting enough power.
Do you know what kind of power supply you have? (Maker, Design, Wattage)

I have exactly the same problem as you...i've browsed around a bit...and i heard that the problem could be coming from media software...such as Real Player etc...Mine's been out of service for about 5 months now, I checked the power deco/reconected it and all that but still nothing.

Lets start simple fellas-We are using "optical" drives. Things get dirty. If the drive will read some but not all disks-there are kits that will allow for proper cleaning of the disks.

no no no.... the CD drive wont read any CDs at all. it's like it is completely inactive. the light on the drive lights up when you put a CD in and acts like it is reading it, but nothing ever happens. the light jsut keeps blinking as if it was reading the CD.

I've had the same problem with a philips drive since the day I bought it. From my personal experience, I figured it was from a static discharge of some kind.

Check the ribbon cable connector, make sure it's hasn't come lose, both on the drive and mother board. If this doesn't help I would look at replacing the C/D drive, chances are it may have died.
