Greetings all. I have a problem with my Acer Aspire 1681wlmi, which I have had for 6 months... The CD/DVD Drive doesn't work. I can't eject/open the disc tray, and the E drive does not even feature in 'My Computer'. The disc that is in there can not be read. When I press the eject button, the orange LED comes on and the disc tray whirrs a little, but doesn't open. I tried a system restore - didn't work. 1. Has anyone else had this problem - if so, what happened 2. I emailed Acer and they just told me to send it in, I really can't afford to with the amount of work I am doing on it at the moment So, it would be very, very much appreciated if any of you guys could help me out!!

You can use a paper clip to open the drive door, just unbend it and look for a small hole in the front, and push it in. The door will now open. Try a different disk, if you still have the problem, you may just want to get a replacement and install it yourself. Ask Acer if you do that will they alow you to send in the defective CD and then you can install a second drive when you get it back

I paperclipped it, got the cd out, and it has made no difference to the problem. Is there any drivers or software that might need reinstalling?

Sounds like a physical problem, probably the reason they told you to send it in. My advice: send it in now, pay a few dollars to do so or you're gonna be paying for a new drive once they decide not to accept it back.
