Boot problems, what's the culprit?

So over that last week or so, my pc has beenr andomly freezing. First it was during games and media player visualizations but it also happened when i was brosing through files. It gradually got worse and worse to the point where as soon as i got onto the desktop and moved the mouse an inch, the system would lock up or restart itself. Ive tried the temperature check, has a wahcking great fan cooling it off but it didnt help.
Now, ive tried to boot TEN times this morning, ive only managed to get to the desktop ONCE and it lasted for 46 seconds before crashing (timed it).
It runs the bios check etc, gets past the blue bar Windows Xp loading screen but then either feezes on the blue "Welcome Screen" or just goes black and feeezes.
I think it may be the hard drive. It was making more cluning sounds that usual and at one point it was rattling really hard in it's fixings.
I want to try it in an other pc, but I don't know if that would cause it to screw it up
Anyone have any ideas what it could be?
