Hi, I have an old computer with an Intel PIII 650MHz (I think it's coppermine) and I'm thinking of turning it into a little basic Apache server, I have seen some people selling some faster PIII processors on the web lets's say between 800 and 900 MHz, what I need to know is if the socket type and size are all the same, and how far up can I upgrade this box, the motherboard is an i810, so I do need a little help for I don't know much about HW and so I can make a descent server for simple web pages. ok, I opened up the pc, took out the processor, I was expecting to see something like 650/256/100/1.7V but no, it has written on it the following info: RB80526PY650256 QOO4A111-1046 SL3VJ By what I found out with this info is that I think my processor runs on 100MHz Bus Speed and most of the faster PIII I've seen run on 133MHz Bus The socket type is 370 Can I run a 133 on 100 Bus? Thx

If you have 100 mhz ram you have to run 100 mhz, if you wan to change over to 133 it will support it. Intel originally designed Socket 370 for PPGA Celeron processors. Newer Socket 370 motherboards additionally support FC-PGA Celeron and Pentium III processors. The difference between the two versions is electrical; some pins are used differently and voltage requirements have been changed from Intel's VRM 8.2 to VRM 8.4. In addition, Celeron processors require a 66 MHz front side bus (FSB), and Pentium III processors require a 100/133 MHz FSB. Some older Socket 370 motherboards support VRM 8.4 and variable bus speeds, so adapters are available that convert the socket pinout to allow FC-PGA processors to work.

Ok, thx a lot for that tip, well, I didn't check what the RAM chips had written on it, but I found a PIII at 900MHz with 100 Bus speed, so that's pretty much what I was looking for (kind of hoping for 1GHz), but yes, I did see on the processor socket that it had written PGA 370, so this means I can also replace with a Celeron? And so just if my memory is 133MHz I can run 133 MHz Bus Speed? Cool! Thx again!

I think it needs something special to support a celeron. But, your chipset may not support 133. Mine doesnt. some of the first P3's were on a P2 chipset.

but this celeron is 100MHz FSB not 133, so I don't know....

The celeron would be downgrading, save the money and use what you have.

yeah I guess you are right, I was thinking that a Celeron wouldn't be a great step...well I'll just see if I come across something more like a standard PIII at 100 FBS which is hard to find, there are more of them in the slot1 type than 370 pin with higher speeds...
