Never get 256MB RAM chips.
We are in the age where a total of 512MB is not cutting it.
I would suggest the 512MB chip or the 1GB if you have enough money.

I agree with Aggressor Prime.

I think most people build or buy decent systems and then turn frugal when it comes to the ram.

I read on a website/forum once that RAM is one of them most important pieces of hardware that you put into your machine.
The person said that all operations go through your ram at some point. You have a processor that wants to run at 200mph, and the ram only wants to go 150mph. (it was a generic analogy.. but relatively close)

I know people who have top of the line processors and decent mother boards, and then buy the cheapest pair of PC3200 sticks they can find.

I've said it before on these boards on a previous/early post, but i'll say it again for those who might have missed it  I only buy Corsair XMS memory. Most of their modules are 6-3-3-2 2T or faster, and come with a factory installed heatsink.. heatsink saves ya about $9.99 down the road.

I was watching The Screen Savers while they were building their lastest UGM and Patrick Norton suggested 512mb up to 1gb of a quality DDR memory module(s). (the case they used for the UGM is the one I bought.. it's niiice)

I don't think most people "need" 2gb of memory. And if you only buy 1 stick of memory you can't operate in dual channel mode.. keep that in mind .

I would suggest a pair of 512mb sticks 8)

If you currently don't use more than 512 MB of ram, I don't see why you would have to upgrade to 1 GB. If you did notice that you were consistently coming close or above 512 on your page file, then, yeah, get another chip.

I have 2 Corsair Value RAM.
Each is PC3200, 512MB, and CAS 2.5.
I also have the nForce 2 400 Ultra for Dual Channel DDR (800MHz).
I think this should be good for me now but my final upgrade will include the following RAM:
3 Corsair 1GB PC3200 (PC4000 if Athlon 64s promote them or higher with 1GB) thats XMS, LL, and PRO if I can.
I want to max out my RAM and do some serious OCing. (PC4400 would be nice.)

Also, I should be working on my biology project; but instead I'm wasting time on the forums.
