Interesting form of copy protection

So, I bought Pink Floyd- The Wall at Walmart today. Got home, and tried to burn a backup copy using my liteon LDW-811s. The drive could not even read the 1st cd (in dos or windows) but the drive could read and play the 2nd cd. I popped the 1st CD in Agressor Prime's Liteon 166s and that was able to read and play it fine. So I used his computer to make a clone cd image file of the 1st cd and made an image file of the 2nd cd on my computer. I then transfered the image file he made over to my computer via fast ethernet network (approx 80mbps actual xfer rate
) and then burned the 2 images to two cd-rs. Now both play fine in my computer.
I find it interesting that these cds are supposed to comply to some standards because they have the CD label on them, yet they cannot even be read in a burner.
