We've just set up a 3MB broadband line, and it works fine for one computer. When we try to run it through the router however, the computers on the network are unable to get online. We've tried using a single computer and other various combinations.

The router is a NETGEAR 8-port cable/DSL Prosafe VPN Firewall with 10/100 Mbps switch FVS318

The modem is a SB5100 Surfboard cable modem

thanks for any advice you can give,

Your router works when just one computer is connected to it, but not more than one? It could be a LAN IP conflict.

I have this problems on occasion. I am using a Linksys BESFR41 router.

The only way I can get the other 3 computers back online is to do the following.

Turn off all computers that are connected to your router/hub/gateway.
Unplugged the cable modem and the router. Leave them both unplugged for 20-30 seconds. Plug the cable modem back into it's power sourse and wait for all the lights to become lit (modem has connected to the server at that point). After all the lights are lit, plug the router back in to it's power source. When you do this the activity lights on the front of the router should flash, or show activity.

After the router has shown activity, boot all computers. You will need to get into your router via an IP address (address for linksys is: 192.168.1.1 .. username:user, password:admin)

Once you are into your router and make sure DHCP is enabled, and also make sure you have enough DHCP slots open to give access to all needed computers. At this point you need to release DHCP clients and Refresh DHCP clients. If your Netgear router has a "DHCP Client Table" you should see all of your computers listed (by whatever name you have given them while installing windows.

I hope this works for ya, cuz it's the only way I can get my network to gain access to the internet after it goes haywire.

Good Luck to ya :)

Might also be a good idea to visit Netgears' website and get the latest firmware for your router.

DHCP could be causing problems, make sure all your ips are either dynamic or static. Also, make sure the DNS servers are correct for each computer (they should all be the same).

Right.. try re-setting your router to pick up a new IP if your IP is Dyamic
