Windows 98 freezing and ScanDisk & defrag won't work

Post by sueleah »

More often than not when compuer gets to the desktop stage it freezes and I have to start again (re-boot ??) approx 3 times before it will let me log on. It also freezes for no apparent reason when I am doing other things. Someone told me I needed to use Scandisk & defrag and I printed off loads of notes on how to do it. I used Disc Clean Up first but ScanDisk kept giving me the "..has restarted 10 times because Windows or another prog is writing to this drive etc etc ". (I don't know what this means !) Defrag won't work atall, I just see the bar showing 0% and it doesn't go any further. I've also tried Diskeeperlite but that did the same thing. I've tried to follow the notes I got off "Putergeek" but most of it is to techy for me.......I know NOTHING about all this ! Any help would be greatly apreciated, but in REALLY simple terms please ! PS... I think I have deleted the temp files I had as my notes told me to. It also suggesed if I was having probs to try running in Safe Mode but I can't get into Safe Mode. I'm hopeless I know.....sorry !

First thing you have to do is diable internet connection (unplug modem) now you have to shut down the virus protection, if you have to press the Ctrl/Alt/Delete keys and go to Task manager/Applications/ and shut down running applications. Now try to do scan disk. You can get into safe mode by restarting the computer and tap the F8 key every few seconds. Let us know if this helps.
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

I had this problem before with Windows98se and after several days of trying to find the cause, I came up with the answer :) The answer is your CPU and your PSU. It is that simple! First of all, change to a better PSU with the 12V rail rating of more than 18A. If the problem has NOT been resolved, change the processor as well. Hope it helps......
