wont work to format c drive
wont work to format c drive
hi ppl,
I need some serious help, my brothers computer was working real messed up so I tryed to format it,
when I come to that place when I choice what drive I want to install a clean copy of XP on the computer blue screens me, after a cupple of times, and after I tryed to repair the installation instead, now the pc says, missing file, hal.dll,
how can I format this computer, any ideas?
I dont know how to use f disk while using a bootable winxp cd, but the thing is, i dont want to remove the other partition, because I hade valuable data on it.. is it possible to run this disk on a other computer as a slave, and while in windows on that other computer format it, put the disk back in my pc and install on it then? do you think this will make the blue screens go away? thanx for helping me,richh0323 wrote:Use "F Disk" first, delate all partitions, then create a new one on "C" and make it active, now format the drive and use NTFS as the file system. Let me know if that helps.

If you can run it as a slave you can save the data to the "C" drive and copy it back later. You can use a old DOS disk for the format comand or you can burn a ISO image CD of the Ultimate Boot CD and that had free dos tools on it.
I think you might have a drive overlay on the drive that isn't letting you format it right.. If you still get the blue screen write down what it says and post it here

If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.
Ok, this is what i will do, Ill take my drive, with C:/ and d:/ partitions on it, run it as a slave on my fathers computer (if possible) and after that I format the c:/ trough windows, after I will put it back on my pc and try to install c:/ on it. I'll let you know what happens later. thanx for the help..richh0323 wrote:If you can run it as a slave you can save the data to the "C" drive and copy it back later.
