I have just realised....

Post by pathachio »

...that one of my PCs has he FSB set at 200Mhz. It is a Compaq Presario, had it for a while, obviously it came pre-built with windoes installed etc. Anyway, the processor is an AMD Athlon XP 1500+ with a Thoroughbred core. The motherboard is capable of an FSB 333Mhz, the memory is DDR333 so that will work. But, as I said, the system clock speed is set to 100Mhz, so the FSB is only 200Mhz. As far as I know the processor is perfectly capable of an FSB up to 333Mhz so why is it set this low? The multiplier is set at 13.5 to compensate for the loss so the CPU is still running at the correct speed. If I up the FSB to 333Mhz will that overclock it too far? (I think the multiplier is locked because there are no jumpers on the mobo to set the multiplier but it is still at 13.5, and no, the combination for 13.5 is not to have them all open so I gather that it must be.....). Can anyone make sense of this and/or tell me if I can set it back up? Thanks.

the fsb should be set to 266, the motherboard can go up to 333, but there will be synch errors with the ide, agp, and pci.

so i can put the system clock up to 133 in the bios without destroying my agp/pci slots with too higher clock speed? that was the bit that confused me as there are no ratio or frequency settings for the AGP/PCI slots, only for the memory and system clock, i didn't want to just wrack it up and beak my mobo.... (if the mobo can go that high then why the errors?)

do you have any idea why it was set lower? It seems a bit strange to me.

actually, i do now have an idea but first i need to check something; i have several programs that tell me my CPU model, type, MHz etc, but do then just know that it is an athlon XP and the get the 1500+ from the clock speed (i.e if i overclocked it then would it tell me that it was a 1600+ or a 1700+ etc) or is it definitely a 1500?
