Missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. :cry: I have Windows XP. windows won't start because it says the file is missing or corrupt. I don't have a startup disk. I don't know what to do. I can't start it up in safe mode nor Dos mode. I've tried. How do I retstore this file or repair if the computer won't let me do anything? I even ran the diagnostics. I keep getting the error. Help!

There are a number of articles on how to fix this problem (see below); however, all of them require that you start your system. you can also do a repair install of the OS

You will need the XP CD to repair this error, I don't know of any way to fix it without it
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.
