can't rewnew IP address

my dell deminisions 4600(XP PRO) was fine until the other night it locked up and it had to be rstarted. no I can't get on the internet. getting an IP address starting with 169. I can't repair the IP. I tried CMD int the run widow as per my internet provider, and get the following error. C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.com The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction CS:054a IP:05ee OP:f0 05 00 00 f4 choose 'close' to terminate the application. with the options to close or ignore when I click ignore the window closes and nothing else happens. another weird thing started when i was trouble shooting. when right clicking on MY COMPUTER Properties hardware then device manager I now get windows can not access the specific device, path ,or file any advice?

Ok do you have a way to transfer a utility to fix your ip address problem to that computer it should be able to fit on a floppy. I will send you a link to that in a little bit. As for the other problems have you scanned the system for viruses adware etc. Let me know and I'll give you a hand... Thanks, Austin
