If you are using XP do a restore to an earlier time, do this in the help/support section. Or try add/remove programs, and see if you have a search assistant bar you installed, and remove it.
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

there is nothing in the add\remove programs, and the system restore does not have restore points that go back that far. is there anyway i can edit the registry to fix this?

Do you have any idea on the name of the search companion? If so do a Google search and maybe you can find uninstall instructions, or post the name here and we'll try and help. I wouldn't recommend editing the reg inless you really know what you're doing

Open up the disk with the folder you want to access. Go to tools and the click folder options. Click file types tab and wait for it to load Click 'file folder' to highlight it then click on advanced on the same tab In the action box there should be 2 options find and open. If not click on new and in the action box type open in the apps box type explorer.exe click ok for all box's that's the fix if ya want it, and yes i am very familiar with regedit. i feel like i have wasted your time, cause i found the fix on this site(sorry) thanks for your time and help
