Browsers not opening
Hi before i start let me tell you i know nothing about computers. i think the operating system on my computer is Windows 98 second edition.
We dont have broadband so we have a dial up type connection, but when we are connected to the internet i would have to click on the internet exploer icon to go to the home page, but lately the Internet Exploer has become so slow so i downloaded mozilla firefox and that is much quicker but the problem now is - that when i have dialled up and am conected to the Internet and then go to click on the mozilla firefox icon on my desktop - it just doesnt open up at all,so i end up having to go click on the Internet Explorer and using that buts its so slow and then suddenly after about 20 mins on IE the mozilla firefox just suddenly opens up and then i use that.
does anyone have any solutions, thanks ?

sound like you have a SH*T load of spyware and or you have too many processes running at the same time. this is my area or expertice fortunelaty. lolz.
1. Right Click IE > Delete Cookies > Delete Files
2. http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html (Ad-Aware Personal SE v1.06)
3. Scan and delete all spyware.
Tell me if that worked.

Yeah!! fourteen and going on cryptanologist!!

Large burger,
I downloaded the ad adware link thing u gave me but when i go t run it/do a scan it after about 30 secs it just stops and says problem and cannot be run and the compyter just freezes,i even downloaded it again and the same thing happened, its as if its a virus or something.
The same thing is happening again now today i can only open internet explorer,i have downloaded mozilla fireofx and now netscape broswer and neither will open until about 15 mins after im on internet explorer.
Any ideas as to why these downloaded browsers wont open ?
Rich i dont understand what you want me to - you would have to give me more basic steps as to what to do cos i know nothing about comps

Follow these instructions exactly:
Completely uninstall any extra internet browsers you have. Don't worry about IE, it repairs itself and cant be deleted anyways, ive tried.
Restart your computer in safe mode by pressing f8 before the windows xp loading screen comes up. While in safe mode, run that Adaware, and run your virus scan.
If this still doesn't work, let us know.

Hmm look up 98lite and see that IE can be removed.........firefox is probably slow to boot due to all the crap IE has dumped on your system...........if your car is slow do you fill up the trunk with a tonne of lead to make it better?
I believe sundancekid is running 98 on an older machine.........a fresh install would not take too long especially using 98lite (free version does the job)after backing up your data.
Google for atm.....it will show you whats acually running and what is slowing you down.
aspack is handy for older machines ......it can compress say the main firefox exe to half its size and speed up booting for example.
avoid using IE,outlook and msnmessenger....notorious for viruses etc.......good choice of software and a few simple network tweaks and antivirus software is not needed.......it doesn't always work anway as many I know have discovered...
have fun and reclaim your computor
