Can't do updates or install new programs

I'm running XP Pro, and suddenly I can't run and/or update McAfee virusscan, or even reinstall it. I did run McAfee's free online virusscanner, and it showed I had no viruses. Also, I very recently attempted to install Roxio's 7.5 Media Center, and the install shut down three times in a row. I would greatly appreciate instructions on how to fix this problem. Everything had been running fine before. I use Registry Mechanic 5.0 and PCBugDoctor, and have never detected problems with either. Thank you.

Use SYSTEM RESTORE before the accident happened You can use this program by 1 clicking Start 2 click All Programs 3 click Accessories 4 click System Tools 5 click System Restore 6 click Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time Now click the date where you want to restore and volla this could take a while though
