Problem deleting adware.virtumonde with Symantic download

Post by sherrylightning »

I have been having really annoying pop-ups advertising winfix 2005 for about a month. So, I ran my Norton Antivirus and it came back with the result that "adware.virtumonde" was in my system. I followed a link that took me to the Symantic site that had a download to remove the adware.virtumonde. So, I downloaded it and ran it. After the tool had finished, the Symantic tool told me that it did not find "adware.virtumonde" in my system. I then reread the instructions for using the tool and it said to run the tool that would remove "Trojan.vundo" from the system and THEN run the "adware.virtumonde" removal tool again. I did that, too, which included turning off system restore (removing all previous restore points) and turning off my internet connection. After doing all this, SYmantic reported that it did not find Trojan.vundo nor did it find adware.virtumonde. I still have the annoying pop-ups and don't know where to go from here. I would appreciate any assistance anyone could give me. I don't know what else to do. Thanks so much in advance! Sherry

Code: Select all

This should clear up whatever you may have in your system.

I tried, but the problem is still here!

Post by sherrylightning »

I still have the problem, but the annoying web page that keeps popping up has changed from "Try Winfix" to several other things. Some are very obscure, such as which chemicals to use on your farm instruments. One additional problem is that, without my clicking on a link, I have been having pages from either my History or my Favorites links opening up by themselves in the middle of when I am doing other things. This is extremely annoying. On the suggestion of someone at this Forum, I downloaded a free copy of Adaware and ran it several times. It always finds pop-ups to delete, but not this virus that is my main problem. I feel like I am stuck with this "Adware Virtumonde." Any assistance would be sooooo welcome. Thanks, Sherry

I run adaware and spybot S&D regularly and they don't find it. I think maybe I had something running while doing the symantec fix. I too am open for suggestions on how to remove this rotten virus.

If you have a current copy of Norton follow this link and follow instruction fully. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... monde.html
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

Symantec manual fix didn't work

Post by happigrl »

I did not have luck with this. I carefully followed the instructions several times. When I run Norton Antivirus in safe mode as instructed, it doesn't recognize any infections at all, so I can't find files that need to be deleted. Any ideas?

try looking in your system32 folder for it. u gotta un-hide it to access it. it may be hidden under another name. i use microsoft anti-spyware beta. that will at least tell ya all about the supsicious folders( u gots to do a complete long scan!!!!). norton and most spyware programs (including ms antispyware beta) dont really or cant access the system32 folder becuase windows hides it and protects it from being accessed for removal and thats ware all those damn ad-ware and spyware find santuary. i have to do that crap all the time to all my family comps when every they complain to me about pop-ups and sloooooow downs. just keep trying.

I'm having the same problem as the others. Except when I do a search, I can't find Sysupd nor Winupd as a file or in the Registry. I even dowloaded Sysinternals Process Explorer, to see what's happening real-time. It refers to them as Mutants. There does seem to be a call to it using that freeware utility, but not in Windows Search mode. Not even using Advanced Search inside the files. I can't actually get to them, but I can delete there activity with this utility. Similar to the use and function of Ad-Aware Se. But the keep coming back. Help!!! Thanks FairGuy
