Wireless Networking - Laptop to PC/Printer

Post by Joetheeskimo »

I've attempted networking before, but never wireless. Now I'm trying to figure out how to use a wireless connection to connect a laptop to a PC in the same room, and share the connection that PC has with the printer. Windows XP Professional on the laptop told me to plug in a flash drive. It put some files on the flash drive, and then told me to plug the drive into the wireless adapter, and then into all the computers I want to have networked wirelessly. I'm a tad confused as to what an adapter is and what I should get. When I searched CNet, a variety of things came up, and they looked completely different - some were small and shaped like flash drives, and others looked like big boxes with an antenna sticking up. I have no idea what kind of specs I should be looking for, either. Any helpful recommendations? Thanks.

First of all is you're laptop equipped with a moble (wireless) chip? If not you have to get a wireless adapter. You can get either a card bus adapter, or a USB adapter. Do you have this? If not then you do have to get them first. I use a D-Link and don't have any problems. You need a router and adapter, get a 108 mbps if you can afford it. Here is a link , check out the DWL-951 bundle. http://www.dlink.com/promotions/rebates/
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

So, I need to get an adapter and router? Can I just use the router I usually use for regula internet, or does it need to be wireless?

If you're modem is a wireless one then just the adapter, but if you just have the wired modem you need both. You hook the router to the modem, run a cable to the desktop, from the router, and the card in the laptop. Here is a link to give you a basic idea. http://www.dlink.com/configurator/step_ ... ction=soho If you have any more questions feel free to ask
