Computer Start Up Problems

Post by The Aixtase »

Hi all, I've installed windows xp professional onto my computer, activated it and all. But when I start my machine up, from the point of the boot screen to when my desktop is fully active (everything has loaded) around five minutes have gone by. This isn't all, my computer is extremely slow even at opening up wordpad. However, I put it into sleep mode, wake it up 20 seconds after and it's as good as normal (fast :) ). Could anyone explain this strange problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D Edd

It's being doing this since I installed it...and that was about 1 to 2 months ago. Havn't formated it since. Is the memtest program the one with the floppy disk?

What are you're computer spec's, how much memory do you have. Have you run a virus scan on it lately? If you don't have virus software get it here for free http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 If you connected to the internet when you upgraded you're computer may have be infected, there are alot of security holes before getting SP2 installed. I have heard some computers being attacked within 5 minuts of installation.
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

Computer specs: Asus P5WD2 Premium Motherboard Intel Pentium D 830 processor 1x512MB DDR2 PC4300 Corsair value select ram 1xSparkle GeForce 6600GT Vivo 2x200GB Maxtor Diamond Max 9 SATA Hard Disks (Raid0) 1x160GB Maxtor Diamond Max 9 SATA Hard Disk I didn't have SP2 on my pc when I first installed XP so that is a possibility. I ran a virus scan on my computer a day ago with Kaspersky Antivirus Pro Personal 5 (trial). I've also scanned my computer with Adaware SE and not found nothing. (and yes my friend got a W32 Blaster within 5mins of his first connection!). :P
