Computer Won't Shut down

When I try to shut down my computer it says computer saving settings, computer is shutting down and then it just hangs there with computer shutting down message on the screen and I eventually have to shut down manually. When I put it in hibernation it shuts down just fine. I have a Dell dimension 2350 Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.00 GHz Processor Speed: 1.95 Ghz Memory: 512 MB Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition I have run all my virus protection and scans and I have no viruses. I have installed new wireless keyboard and mouse and new webcam within the last month, and if any of this is the cause it took at least 2-3 weeks to surface. I am not sure if there is a program running in the background that is causing this problems and would not know how to determine this. All help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have found this problem is a bad app. or driver. A few things you can try to isolate it, Try a restore to a restore point creared around 2 weeks ago. Use MSCONFIG and see what apps are still running before you shut down. Now do a selective start up and disable the apps. listed, now reboot and see how it shuts down. Re enable the apps. one by one and try again, note the results. Thanks for your quick response. I tried the system restore but did not solve the problem. Did the following and I hope I did this right (didn't know what app was - is this applications?) Anyway I went into run/msconfig/startup tab and disabled all. Applied and shutdown computer. Same thing happened it just hung at "Computer is shutting down" and had to shut down manually. The only thing running at start up is my McAfee protection.

Yes what you did was right, and they are applications. Download Hijack this and install into it's own folder on you're desktop. Run it then post the log here and I will take a look at for you. You can find the app. here http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

You have some entries here from Avast, are you using this software, I see you are using Norton also, but that entry looks good. If you aren't using Avast, see if you can do a program remove, in add /remove programs or if you have a uninstall in the Alwil software file. You have files missing that maybe affecting how you're computer runs. If you can't do above run Hijack this again and check the listed entries to fix them. Let us know what happens either way. If you remove the program, this would be the best, then see how the computer reacts, and post a new Hijack this log. I uninstalled Avast, ran Hijack This and the entries you listed are gone....and the computer shut down!!! Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate this. When I had contacted Dell with this problem their only suggestion was to reinstall windows XP - someone once told me that when they give you this advice that you have run into a lazy technician because 9 times out of 10 there is a way to fix the problem.
