1) Start Applications -> Control Center
2) Under Appearance and Themes, click on Fonts
3) Check off "use anti-aliasing for fonts."
4) Check off "use sub pixel hinting."
5) Click Apply and close the window.

:(This is not CoolType. I have to say, the worst thing about Linux is it's bad font-engine. This is critical!! If you use fonts with a size less than 8 it looks really bad. Can't hardly be read.
I even prefer the font rendering (kerning) in Windows 95. I'm quite new to Linux. I was suprised to find out that Windows 95 had "clearer" fonts than Linux/KDE, that it's readability was greater. (Even though linux has smoothed fonts.)
I'm beeing totally honest.
Linux (KDE) is really worse than Windows XP in almost any area. Userability and speed is MUCH better than security, for most people XP is secure enough. XP is lightning fast, and has great, clear fonts. Very user-friendly. Great filemanager (explorer), (at least compared to konqueror).
Linux is free, and thus great. But not better than Windows XP, stop kidding. It's a great alternative, but not better.
The font-rendering is especially bad. I say this because if nobody cares, NOTHING will happen. Somebody needs to understand this great font-rendering problem and fix it.
Linux/KDE needs...
* ClearType http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypeInfo.mspx (Linux is three years behind.)
* Prefetch. Programs starts about 4 times faster (OpenOffice) in XP. (can't remember, but its a huge difference. It may even be 10 times faster.)
* Menues in KDE has a AWFUL delay, slows down a lot, but in Windows with TweakUI they are immediate.
* Drag and drop, userability, compatibility, speed, **STABILITY** (KDE crashes (almost...) as much as Windows 98 did. (But it's very easy to fix a crash, I agree, but difficulty to install an update)), and aaargh...

Sorry, for beeing rude. There is nothing wrong with my graphics card, drivers or anything. What I'm saying is, that the font-smoothing in Windows XP is much clearer and nicer than in KDE/Linux. Look at the screenshots.

In order to use web and graphical applications, with the same (high) standards as in Windows, there NEEDS to be clear fonts (the FONTENGINE not the fonts themselves). (You read texts all the time on your screen.)
Even if you disable font-smoothing, the font-kerning is not in order. Where are the super-programmers who can do it - upgrade the X-fontengine so that it looks as nice as in XP with ClearType?
