AMD has an onboard memory controller and Hypertransport technology.
Those two devises is the key that separates the K7s from the K8s.
If you were to compare these two versions, compare the Athlon XP 3200 and the Athlon 64 3500. They have the same cache and the same GHz, yet the Athlon 64 3500 greatly tes the Pentium 4 3.4GHz EE, and the Athlon 64 3200 has problems ting just the Pentium 4 3.2GHz.
Those two elements make a huge difference, and more so as the Ghz increase. Until Intel uses these technologies, AMD has no need to worry about falling from the top of CPU performance.
Also, 64-Bit Prescotts use a downgraded AMD64 technology. Also, they are NOT, I greatly focus on the word "NOT," desktop CPUs. They are intended to be workstation and server class ONLY. That means you will not be able to buy these CPUs easily or get them from the desktop selection from Dell.
As for dual-core Prescotts, one word, heat. Sure, they can make it run as well as the AMD Athlon XP Palomino series, but if you got 2 of those hot cores in one package, you are talking about major heat. That is why Intel will continue with BTX. That is why heat pipes are still coming out. The sun will still rise, the day will still come, and it will be way too hot to handle!

Its going to take Intel longer than till January to transition to a processor that will be able to compete. The P4's scaling isnt going to be much, this can already be seen with the amount of heat dissipated and wattage used. Intel doesnt seem to want to migrate to strained silicon either, which AMD will which greatly helps reduce heat. AMD is currently using SOI (silicon on insulator) on their 13mcron process which is really helping those chips run cool. Intel is just WAY behind in the technology game right now, they are going to have to have a completely new architecture to compete, other wise NetBurst will be coming into a lot of problems.
