Eroded jumper block/cap on a CDRW drive- a problem?

Hi Folks,
my ASUS CRW-5224A suddenly stopped working recently and I've
been told I need to replace it.

I don't know that much about computers but I did read that the cables
should be checked in case they had come lose.

The cables were fine but the jumper cap/block on the back of the CDRW drive appeared to be eroded and the pins were showing through.

My installation guide says that failure to correctly place the jumper blocks may cause irreperable damage to the drive- could this have something
to do with why it's no longer working? Would it be worth putting a new cap/block on there to see if it that's the problem?

Hi folks,
thanks for your advice. I did pull a cap of another computer
but it did not make any difference.

I replaced the CDRW myself with a new one (and it was easy) and the cap that came with it was the same- it doesn't have a 'top' to it- so it wasn't eroded or melted which was a relief.
