Desktop problem

Hi,

I'm a novice at this computer stuff and would really appreciate some help.
My brother is having a problem with his computer. He has Windows XP.
When he boots up his computer it takes him to his Login, he types in his info, and then his desktop goes to a blank screen, no icons.

We really need some help with this. Thanks so much in advance.
