Totally Stuck - is this unsolvable?

I have a 6142DVD Advent notebook with XP. Neither mouse pad, an external mouse or keyboard works and I can't turn it off to reboot from disk.. all it does is hibernate.
When I bought it 2nd hand some keys didn't work properly ('home' thought it was 'end' and ctrl-x did nothing) so I tried reinstalling the keyboard driver.. I tried a couple from the list given in Windows but nothing changed.. then i tried a non-compatible USB keyboard driver (totally stupid i know). When I restarted the notebook, I reached the windows log in screen but neither mouse nor keyboard is responding. I've tried external PS2 mice and keyboards and a USB keyboard. None worked.
I've tried rebooting the system from a recovery disk but can't because the 'off' button simply puts the machine in hibernate mode and it won't load from CD (not sure if this will help anyway). Removing the battery doesn't turn it off either.
Can't get into the bios as keyboard isn't working.
What do I do???
Should I buy a microsoft USB keyboard which i changed the driver to and try that?

try booting from a windows disk.. There might have been a cunfusion with the drivers and windows failed.. as usual
