I use WinRAR and have for a very long time. It has the second best compression algorithm from me knowledge (7zip can be marginally better sometimes), but has one of the best interfaces and feature-sets possible. I use it mainly for archiving and backuping, as I usually use the space that I would save thru compression, to include a recovery record in the file (or you can make recovery volumes as seperate files).
I've never even seen any bugs in WinRAR, and it has definately treated me well over the years. Anybody else have something to say about this topic? Anyone disagree with me?
Archive/Backup/Compression Software - RAR is Dominate
I have found the WinRAR program & feature set so useful, I bought my copy of WinRAR a while ago. However, you can use the entire program for free without restriction, and you only have to deal with a window asking you to register every once and a while - similar to WinZIP. I would at least recommend trying it out - Recovery Record/Volumes, contextMenu interface, GUI for all the many options, compression profiles,
no bugs, I could go on and on (and in fact, I have in either the <A HREF="http://www.astonshell.com/forum/">Astonshell</A> or <A HREF="http://www.girder.nl/phpBB2/index.php">Girder</A> forums that I frequent).
Also, there is a RAR cmd-line tool for Linux, and a RAR tool for Palm-OS, and a few others I think - check the website.
