Hi guys, been a while since I've been here, but I recently ran intoa small dilema.
I have a Sony DvD/CD-Rom combo in my machine. The problem is that is will no longer play DvD movies.. no movies! I am quite aware that all DvD players don't always play all DvD's, but this beast won't play any.
However, it will still read CD's.. music, softeware etc.
Is there a known fix, or possible solution to this problem?

Try installing the demo of PowerDVD, also reinstall the drivers for the IDE chanel and the optical device, and it couldnt hurt to update the firmware.
If you have another computer, you could try the drive in that.
Will it display the file contents of the dvd and just not play the movie, or does it say that there is no disc in the drive when you put a dvd in there?
Oh, and good to see you back

It doesn't recognize the dvd discs at all. However, I can put in InterVideo's WinDvD (to reinstall it) and it reads it just fine, read Madden 2k5 fine also... just doesn't see dvd's
I'll try the updates (if available), and see what happens then.

When the DvD drive took a dump.. it was 3 days after I installed a brand new HDD in my system. I can't foresee it being corrupted already.
I recently went to newegg and bought a new DvD player.. it's working just fine in the same machine with the same config. I just can't figure out what the hell happened to the old one

I read this thread with great interest. I burn martial art instrutional dvds from my dvd-rom onto an external burner. upt to jan 29 everything has worked fine. since then, any dvd i burn or master i play in either device only play through 29:02 mins of video. i have an hp and have been dealing with their poor support for a week.
i have done system restore, uninstall-reinstall the drives, deleted the upper/lower filters, updated drivers, run diagnostics (all is well) and no success. a commercial dvd plays fine. and the problem is not one created dvd or one brand. it is every one, every brand.
any thoughts? i would appreciate any ideas.

I seem to be having the same problem!
I not too long ago bought a LiteOn DVD R/RW Player and it works fine, except for the fact that it doesn't read, player or recognize dvd's. I tried using PowerDVD 5 player to open the DVD but get an error message stating, "A disc with unsupported format in drive F" ( "F" being the location of the LiteOn). I paid damn near $170.00 dollars for this thing and I agree with the other poster that I now have a very expensive CD writer. Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening?

Dwayne - My LiteOn worked fine for over a year. But now it has the same problem you are describing. It works fine with CD's, but now won't even recognize or play a DVD, much less burn one. I also have PowerDVD 5 installed. Any luck with yours?
