The K8 series consisted of Socket 754, 939, and 940.
Unlike the majority of the K7s (Socket A), it was not universal.
Things are going to change with the K9 series.
The K9s will have the same socket for low end, medium end, and high end CPUs. That socket is Socket M2 (1207 pins). So this is how it works:
Opteron arrives Q305 on Socket 940 with DDR. Athlon 64 FXs arrive Q405 on Socket 940 with DDR (Yes, it is that dreaded socket that requires registered RAM.) In 2006, AMD will launch their Socket M2 for the updated K9 Athlon 64 FXs (Windsor core), the K9 Athlon 64s (Orleans core), and the K9 Semprons (Manila core). The Semprons will differ from the Athlon 64s in the fact that they will not have Presidio and Pacifica technologies. All of these CPUs will have dual channel DDR2. It is unknown, but likely, if the Semprons will have 64-bit in the K9 series. More here.
As for the Opteron transition to their renewed platform, while certain, it is unknown what socket they will use. Hopefully they will go Socket M2.
