Please help....WindowsXP errors

MULTIPLE Problems

"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close...."
I can't get this off my screen....I can't access my taskbar or start menu.

I can open various programs including web browser but some programs will not work. Current Quicken data seems to be missing also.

Tried restart....Spysweeper scan. No help.

Tried to scan for viruses but when I opened Norton through My Computer and tried a system scan, an error states
"CommonUI is null or not an object"

Think I need to reinstall? I have an XP Reinstallation CD but it's not mine. Came with a friends new Dell computer. Can I still use it? My system is about 3 years old and not Dell.

Any other ideas? Thanks.

goto start - > run -> msconfig

boot into diagnostic mode

install, update, and run spybot, adaware, and norton

find out who made your hard drive and download the diag utitities for it, run the diag utilities from dos, do a full scan of the disc

backup all data, run a virus scan on the backup, and reformat the hard drive
