How to change dll?

Post by ist »

Greetings everybody. I need your help. I am not a great specialist in computers. My computer is rather old and I have Windows 95 installed on it. Yesterday I tried to install MikTeX (version 2.4...) and had some problems. The installation program said that the library Comctl32.dll (common control library) on my computer is outdated and I cannot install MikTeX until I update it. I downloaded an update package for Windows 9X and NT and started it. The program said : everything is OK, your library is updated. But now my computer opens windows slowely (the icons arrive not all at once but one by one and rather slowely). I looked in Windows\System and it seemed to me that the only file which had been changed was Comctl32.dll (as I learned later it is 'responsible' for icons, buttons etc.) I tried to put my old file instead of this new but I couldn't because Windows used it. I also tried to start a package which contains older version of this library but I got a message that there was no need to change this library (of course, because it was already updated). Could someone help me? How can I substitute the new library by the old one? Are such changes possible? Thank you very much.
