Neither CD Drive is showing up in "My Computer"

Post by hyppsyc »

Ok, This problem started about a year ago. One day, both of my Cd Drives just didn't show up in "My Computer". Now, about 4 months or so ago, the bottom drive randomly appeared and worked, but the moment my computer went into sleep mode or was shut off, they didn't register anymore. So, we re-installed windows XP (not just because of the drives, there were other issues) and got a new drive. we replaced the drive that completely stopped working and both of the drives worked for a day. Then once again, after we rebooted the computer (because things were installed), enither of them showed up in "my computer". The New drive that I just put into the computer opens and closes and the light in the front even shows up, however nothing shows up. Please help me with this problem.

Do they show up in the POST when you boot up? If not I would look at replacement ribbon cables.
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

ok, my bottom drive just worked again about an hour ago...and then i restarted and it was gone again. Would it still be faulty wiring if it is showing up randomly? I'm pretty sure the cable leading to the upper drive is faulty because that drive has not worked for a long time and i just replaced the drive with a new one but it still didn't work...plus. the one that just worked a bit ago was one of my old ones, so i'm pretty sure tat it isn't my actual drives that are messed up. Thanks for your help.

I would get a replacement cable, they are omly a few dollars and that is most likely the problem. Make sure the jumpers are set right and I would use the secondary IDE channel keeping you're hard drives on the primary. Just in case you want a reference here is a link. http://www.buildyourowncomputer.net/step7.html
