Initially WinXP computer overheating with Win98 HDD?
I set up my home-built computer with WinXP and it worked fine. I also had another computer set up with Win98 working fine. When I needed to try to install the older HDD into my newer computer as a master so it can boot up in 98, Windows finished booting and gave me the message "your processor is overheating and the computer will be shut down" I know there is nothing wrong with the setup/cooling system because it was working just fine staying between 50-55 degrees with the other HDD. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm considering just setting up a partition on my other HDD and making it a dual boot system but is that the only way?
It gave me this message when I attempted to boot it up with just the one 98 HDD. I figured I would make sure it starts with just the one before I attempted to use both the HDDs, plus I was also worried that the 2000 HDD would "recognize" the 98 and override the boot sequence to boot in 2000 which is not what I'm trying to do. Currently I'm playing the game with my old computer (on the 98 HDD) but it has a VERY outdated video card (16 colors!) so thats why I'm trying to play it on my new computer (my first home-built computer) Could it be something to do with the information that is stored on RAM or in CMOS?
You simply cannot have a computer with 98 and XP installed on the same drive or seperate drives. (98 uses the fat32 file system and XP uses NTSF. Your asking your computer to boot two different OS,and its getting on is nerves. It saved in CMOS all your settings for XP and you asked it to boot 98.
It will boot that drive-simply follow the instructions for clearing the CMOS.
Your having this problem because XP allows for CPU temp monitoring. Win 98 does not.
Format the Win 98 drive and use it as a secondary, your computer will love you for it.
