Need help with CPU temperature.

Post by JIM2003 »

Hi, I am new to the forums. I have an Intel 3.0E processor and I was wondering what the average temperature is. Because yesterday my computer just shut off and wouldnt start back up for a while. I think my computer over heated. I went in to the BIOS right after I was able to get it back up and the CPU temperature was 50 degrees celsius/122 degrees Farenheit. Is this Normal and is this what caused my computer to shut down. What should the fan speed be also. I got the fan with the processor. What should I do.

50C for a CPU is accepable if a bit warm for me(consider a better heatsink and fan). Anything at or above 65C is too warm and can cause damage. The only component in a computer that i know of that will shut a rig automatically is the power supply. A CPU fan spins at around 45oorpm and will make a whining noise if the CPU is too hot. This advise is given assuming you have cleaned the dust from the fans.

I think it is my power supply. now that I think about it it does sound different than it did before this happened. And my computer is only 2 months old so I don't think there would be dust.

Do you know the rated whattage of your power supply, and did you build this system?

Although rare these days-computer parts are not always in working order when you get them. And new parts are not cheap. I would do more tests. Leave the computer on for a while. longer than you normally would and dont do anything. Just let it run. If it stays running, you have your answer. By the way, a CPU temp of 50 at startup is kinda warm. Just because you got the heatsink and fan with the CPU doesnt mean its the correct cooling solution for your CPU. The only exception is that if it came in an Intel retail box. (not sure if they exist). I really would make sure your CPU cooling system is adequate. Let me know what ya find out.

Actually, the temperature of 50 degrees celsius was right after my computer shut down so that is the temp of my computer while running normally. And my fan for the CPU came with the processor. It was pakaged with the Processor. It seems to be running fine now but who knows? If it happens again I will be sure to post. Thanks for the help.

It happened again! But this time I couldnt get my computer to start up again. So I went out and bought another Power Supply. It worked! My computer hasnt spontaneously shut down yet so I think I am safe. :D

watch out for the power supply curse: at least four people i know have had that problem. they replaces the ps. the second one burnt up (smoke and all!) then the third worked. all i have to say is watch for small papers cluttering the area and good luck to you!
