help! attempting to install xp but have major problem

Post by thebop »

I am trying to install xp on my computer. I start it up and everything works untill the point that windows needs to restart. The screen says restarting computer but nothing happens. I have to turn it off manually. If I let the computer start it shows the xp screen then goes black, or if I boot off the cd it starts the whole thing over again. I have asked several people and no one seems to know what is going on. Please help if you can.

did ya buy the OEM version of XP? If so this needs to be installed on a "new" drive. Get a win 98 boot disk and erase all the partitions on the drive(run fdisk in the DOS prompt)-dont format it when it prompts you. Restart the computer with the XP in a drive, and when it askes you to do a format, select quick format and try again. Hope this helps.

Look online and get yourself a DOS bootable version of partition magic, thow it on a cd the wipe the hard drive in NTFS (full only dont be lazy about it or it won't work). after that you should be able to install xp but make sure you take the disk out after it reboots then only put it in when it asks for it ( try the second first it has a better chance of working)
