Computer shuts down--- new harddrive

Post by adamlaz »

I recently added a new hard drive to my computer so I could store all of my media files on it (mp3’s, videos, documents, pictures, etc.). its just a normal 120gb IDE hard drive, manufacture unknown but if t really matters I can find out. After installing it I moved all my files to it and reformatted my original hard drive with Windows XP SP2 and all updates. It worked fine but now when ever the computer has to access the the storage drive, the computer shuts down. The power is on and everything, just a black screen and the hard drives aren’t spinning. What is happening and how can I fix this? Thanks in advance, AdamLAZ

How do you have this drive hooked up, as a slave? Will this start up and boot normaly with both hard drives in it, and then crash when you try to view files on the slave thru explorer? IF so then I would look at the power supply, you may not have enough to spin both.
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

well, i have a purepower 550w power supply... so i dont think its a power issue. however i did try making a direct link from the psu but that had no affect. the jumpers are set to slave on the storage drive and on the other drive they are set to master. when i go to explorer, i can open the main drive (D:/) but then when i try to view the contents of a subfolder the computer shuts down. what is wrong! please help----

Try this, go to this site and download the free copy of Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS. put it on the "C" drive make a imiage of the "D" drive and see if the files can be accessed. http://www.stellarinfo.com/index.htm This will give you an idea if there is any good files worth trying to recover, ther is a possibality that the file are trashed and not worth recovering.
