2nd Hard Disk Missing (disappeared)

Post by arachnee »

Hi to All, I had a virus on my computer that Norman could not erase. Therefore I formatted my hard disk C and installed Windows XP. Then I formated my disk D. But I had some problems with Windows XP (to install other programmes), therefore I formated C again and installed Windows 98 but Windows 98 did not recognise my disk D anymore. Stupidly I formatted C again and reinstalled Windows XP but the problem is still existing (no D). I made a scan disk under Performance and Maintenance/Administrative tools/Computer Management/Disk Management but no results. My hard disk D does not appear also under Disk Management. I tried to reconnect the cable several times to the computer but it did not help. Any idea? Thank you for your help.

Do you see the "D" drive when you boot up? if not check all cables and jumpers, if so then you have to run "Fdisk" then format it.
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

I do not see the D when I boot or in the BIOS. I checked all the cables but without results. I did not want also to reconnect everything, as I am not a specialist. What are the jumpers?

Here are a few links to help you, also look at the hard drive and go to the manufactures site to check jumper settings, make sure you check the BIOS ,The second IDE channel has to be enabled and on auto detect. Maxtor has a good flash video on setting up drives, see links below. If this doesn't help let us know and we'll try and help you some more http://www.buildeasypc.com/sw/bios_setup.htm http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxt ... faqid=1171 http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutor ... .php/id/73 http://freepctech.com/pc/001/inst http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/s ... ices.shtml

Thank you again. It was very nice of you to give me all these links and information. I lost the information on my D, but it's ok as I saved most of my files on a USB key. Have a nice day.
