I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this CPU would work with my mobo. I have checked all the basic stuff like FSB and socket.... is there anything else I need to look out for? CPU: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... ctID=57349 mobo: http://www.asrock.com/product/product_k7s41gx.htm [EDIT - could some one also tell me if that mobo can support SDRAM, it says DDR DIMM but all I can find is DDR SDRAM DIMM, will this work? thanks]

The CPU and Mobo combo you have picked out are compatable with one another. I didn't see a price listed on the mobo, and not sure what you're willing to spend on your upgrade, but I strongly recommend THIS motherboard for $75 US. One big difference between this and the mobo you picked out.. the Asus does not have integrated video, so you will need to buy/provide a video card as well. If you chose the ASRock mobo because of it's overclocking capablities, don't fret.. Asus is capable of overclocking aswell (thru the bios) In my opinion, and experience the Asus is a much better made board. There are 3 versions of the A7N8X mobo. One does not support Dual Channel -x version) the -E version supports Dual channel but does not have the LAN/Ethernet port and does not support SATA, and the -e Deluxe offers dual channel and also SATA (in RAID) as well as the Gigabyte LAN port. I have 4 computers in my home, and all use the A7N8X series motherboards. As far as your memory goes, neither of the mobo's mentioned above will use or support SDRAM, and you really don't want SDRAM in today's age and technology. SDRAM is single data rate, DDR is Dual data rate. Simply said, DDR runs twice as fast as SDRAM (sends on both frequencies, as opposed to just 1) You must get DDR DIMMS. The CPU you've chosen will use either DDR333 (also known as PC2700) or DDR400 (also known as PC3200) Your CPU will only take full advantage of the DDR333, due to the fact that your CPU has a 333mhz FSB. DDR400 will work however, but its a slight overkill, sorta. Since you aren't going to push it to the max of 400mhz FSB, based on the specs of the CPU, DDR400 is not really needed, but will work just fine. http://www.newegg.com has a good deal on DDR memory. 1gig of DDR400 for $95.13, and I've been using it in 3 of my computers for the past 2+ years with no complaints. I'm from the US, as is Newegg, and to be honest I have no idea what their policies are with shipping to the UK. Again, I strongly recommend the Asus A7N8X series of motherboards, as do many of the other members of this website. The Asus motherboard(s) I recommended uses the nVidia chipset(s) which are far superior over the SiS chipset on the ASRock mobo. Asus = better bang for the buck :D I hope all that helped ya 8)

Err.. Looking at the link for the RAM you picked out I am a bit confused. It says SDRAM which you said was not a good idea, but the it also says DDR which is what I need :? ??

The ram I linked will work in either of the motherboards that we've talked about. As long as you end up with DDR333 or higher (to support your CPU) you'll be fine.

Ahhh.... I think I understand now, thanks.
