Athlon XP Vs Sempron
Hi there
I am planning on upgrading my ocmputer, but ive got myself into a bit of a pickle over what processor to get.
Now i cant afford a 64bit amd, as im trying to keep the cost down so i can get a 6800.
So i was looking at either getting an Athlon 3200 or a Sempron 3100.
Which one would be better ? I know that the Sempron is new, but is it better/faster/more reliable ?
Would it be a hell of a lot faster compared to my 1800 i have at the moment lol ?
Also, i noticed that the Sempron 3100 is Socket 754, would I just have to get a same socket mobo or one that specifically supports Sempron ? As Ive noticed that the 754 mobos oonly say atm that they are for Athlon 64 and FX, could tey easily take a sempron without giving me any hassle ?

Get the Sempron 3100.
It is just a little slower than the Athlon 64 2800.
It has Hyper Transport and an onboard memory controller.
It is an Athlon 64 2800 with half the L2 cache and 64-bit disabled.
Yes, all of the Socket 754 boards will work with it.

Yes.
However, they tested very nicely against the Celerons. (Just like the Durons did.)

Because the Sempron 3100 is faster than the Athlon XPs.

So the Sempron is slightly better than the Barton ?
Im planning on getting the 3100 sometime soon

And then when i get some more pennies i believe i may go for an Athlon 64 3500, depending on how much I have at the time, and how much the processors are reduced in price, a 3800 maybe more accessible in the not so distant future.

If you want to get a Socket 754 CPU now and a Socket 939 CPU later, I would suggest this motherboard.

Increased cache memory allows more information to be stored closer to the processor, leading to greater performance on software applications such as digital content creation, 3-D gaming, media encoding and office productivity. Featuring QuantiSpeedâ„¢ Architecture for Rapid Execution of Applications.
Sempron is not a better processor than the XP... its better than the Duron but never as good as an Athlon XP... the only reason AMD is taking Athlon XP out of production is because they need to concentrate more on the development and production of 64's technology... anyway i don't think Sempron production will be too long
