While experiencing problems with Windows Explorer the other day, I stumbled upon a little program called Directory Opus. When you install it, it gives you the option of making it the default file explorer or not. If you choose to, it replaces Windows Explorer.
This program has worked quite well for me. All it lacks is a task pane when compared to Windows XP's Windows Explorer, but who uses that anyway. The interface is more customizable than Windows Explorer, and its faster to load, etc. When it is closed, it puts a little icon in the system tray (this can be turned off) so it can be easily opened later with a single click.
It suports duel panels, which are like tabbed web browsing, only for file explorers instead of Web Browsers.
Its image features are more advanced than Windows Explorer's. It has more simple image editing options and more options for previewing Images in the window itself.
The downside is it's only a trial, but it doesn't bother you about registering it.
You can download it at http://www.download.com
Windows Explorer Replacement
mmmmm $60 dollars and 60 day trial.
most file browser seem to use the same dlls as explorer though norton types are lighter.
Been using the windows 95 version recently......light and zippy so far.......
edit...there is a patch from 98lite to have the 98 shell32.dll available for other software whilst using the 95 shell/file browser.
The advantage I have found using the 95 explorer is that it is 100% compatible with windows ....which makes sense....and is 100% unconnected with Internet explorer .hence the improved stability/speed.(IE at that time ran as a separate program resembling early netscape)Next step is to deregister browseui...........fingers crossed

well you do what microsoft want you to do....shame they wont pay to get your computor fixed after their mess leaves you wide open to a myriad of problems...........
If I'm being sarcastic its because of the lack of interaction with any mention of anything other than xp and the software needed to bodge it up....yawn
have fun
