BIOS upgrade: S.M.A.R.T. Compatibilty

I have just installed a new BIOS upgrade (Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG) by eSupport.com people. The Western Digital support ( the makers of my 120 GB hard disk -WD-WMAEL1188961) assured me that
"The S.M.A.R.T feature on all Western Digital hard drives is built in and enabled by default".
After installing the new BIOS I am still informed that The S.M.A.R.T feature is disabled. I could not find in the BIOS Setup any option of either enabling or disabling the S.M.A.R.T feature.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
