need some serious help

Post by septimius72 »

Hi guys,
I've been having this problem for past couple of weeks and I cannot solve it for some freaky reason. Anyways my system/laptop : PIII 800 128mb ram 32mb graphic card, running WinME.
My problem is that few weeks ago ...out of nowhere some f my programs became unreadable.Example: WinCommander interface as well as all the letters/fonts are displayed as rectangular blocks, therefore I cannot read it. Also many new sharewares that i wanted to test out got the same problem. For instance I installed shareware of SysMechanic and again the whole interface including the definitions as well as the help files were displayed in blocks.........what is going on with my computer????
Anyways I wanted to attach the pic of one such instance but I guess we cannot do that on this board.I know it would help better to see it than me describing it.
Can anyone make out what my problem might be..........PLEASE HELP
I had to uninstall some of my favorite softs because of this crap.
I ran all kinds of spyware remowal tools as well as antivirus and nothing ...I got nada....no virus no spyware, mallware or other ware....

I appreciate you help....Thank You

Run spybot and ad-aware in safe mode, always works.

Joking.

Maybe you should backup all your data and re-format, perhaps it thinks it's on a different language setting but it doesn't support the forign language so it's putting the characters as boxes. I'm not sure though. Ask someone else :P

Take you side panel off the case, look at who made your hard drive, go to their website, download their diagnostic utility, run a full diagnostic on the hard drive, backup all data before doing so though.

Do you hear any clicking or scraping noises?

Hi septimius72

Can't say for certain that this is the problem, but have you considered that your font hasn't been currupted in some way? The reason I say this is that sometimes if you do a search on Yahoo for example, and some of the sites are from foreign countries whose font you haven't installed, the text they've written shows as rectangles or funny looking symbols.

If your virus checker etc isn't picking anything up it could be simply that it's this element of windows that needs reinstalling...If you don't know how to install the fonts again, post again and I'll "talk" you though it.

Hope this helps
