D:\ is not accessible disk structure corrupted and....

Post by gseybert »

Need help...system will not read my drives....it says they're there and functionaing fine but they do not...... Symptoms Can't use DVD or CD-ROM / RW drives Can boot the PC from DVD drive (start machine with Windows disk in drive) Neither drive will execute the program on the disk whne loaded into the drive The drives both show in explorer If I put disk in DVD drive, go to Explorer I get an error that says "D:\ is not accessible disk structure is corrupted and unreadable" If I put disk in CD ROM drive and go to Explorer I get no error but it appears the disk is blank Various disks, same results. I loaded XP a few months ago but I believe it's worked at times since then. I have executed many Microsoft updates including SP2 (not sure if SP2 is on the machine now) The equipment: Gateway Select 800 dekstop AMD Athlon, 800MHZ Drive D DVD drive - NEC DV-5700A manufactured in 2000 Drive E CD-ROM/CD-RW Gateway documents call it an IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32 manufactured 2000 On the drive it says it's a Phillips model # CDD 4801/81 Windows XP- Pro. Originally had Windows Me but I wiped that off long ago, reformatted and loaded XP What I've done Went through the troubleshooting steps in Device Manager. No help. (Note: It asked if I have SCSI I said no ....not sure if I have a SCSI controller ...and unclear on the steps if I do.) Searched for new drivers on the web but found none Searched Gateway site for any upgrade information on my specific machine. Found nothing relevant Searched the web and Microsoft based on the error message above and other queries. Found a few similar experiences but nothing seems to work 1. Several said to download a new UDF reader. I did that but XP disables it. 2. A couple said that I may have multiple copies of Windows on the machine competing. very possible and even appeared true so I completely reformatted and reloaded XP Pro. 3. Confirmed the BIOS was correct Opened the machine and confirmed that all cables were connected. Swapped cables for the disk drives, making the CD-ROM the D drive.....no change
