All is fine one night before I go to bed. The next morning my internet does not work. I have 3 computers connected to a Linsys BEFSR41 router. I have Cox Cable Internet. When I woke up I saw a little bubble on the bottom right corner of XP say, limited or no connectivity. Both XP computers said that, I also have a 2000 computer and it said nothing, but didnt connect. Everything worked the night before. On one XP computer it had the default settings i.e.
Obtain IP Address Automaitcallly, Obtain DNS Server Adress Automatically. These same settings were on the 2000. On my other XP I had givin it an IP address and dns server because i wanted to forward a few ports for a game. All of it worked fine until i woke up that morning. I have no clue what is wrong with it i've tinkered with it for hours. Some body said it may be a bad wire, but i know its not a bad wire. My ISP Cox has nothing to do with it the internet always worked. It is isomething in the router. So is it broken or is there some sort of glitch?
I would say it was your ISP if nothing was different from the night before. either that or something overheated and popped. Unless your using a gateway that is the only thing I can think of
Disconnect your router first, then cable modem. Then plug in your router then cable modem. See if that works.. If not, hold the reset button on the back of your router for 10 seconds and then check.. If it still dosen't work, go upgrade your firmware.. If you still fail, then purchase a new router
I have the exact same setup The_Man. Three computers, a Linksys BEFSR41 router and I use cable internet for an ISP.
This same thing happens to me rather frequently. The only thing I can contribute it to is that my ISP is refreshing my IP and my DHCP is dropping me.
I usually go into the router (192.168.1.1) and "release DHCP". It will take 5-10 secnds before the router completes the task. When it's complete "Renew DHCP". This has always done the trick for me when it happens.
As far as updating the firmware goes..
Good luck with that! Everytime I've updating the firmware from Linksys, my shizz messes up. So I just run the default (accomplish this by using the reset button on the front of the router).
