Please help - comp freezes after I bump into desk!

Post by PCNewbie »

Hi all, I recently bought my first computer, a Dell Dimension. Since I have used it (only about two weeks) I have had a recurring, weird problem; the entire computer, the mouse, keyboard, everything, freezes. Ctrl, alt dlt doesn't work, Ctrl Shift, Esc function doesn't work - I can't even turn the tower off, I must unplug the power. This has happened 5 times, and it took tonights episode for me to realize a pattern; the freezing occurs immediately after I have slightly bumped my computer desk. I assumed that meant there is some kind of glitch, a wire or something that is sensitive or something I am hitting that is causing the freezing. I have spoken to Dell Techs about this, and they can't really tell me what the problem is - One tech told me it must be a virus (already?!) and had me make the computer "new" again (reformatting?) as if it's right out of the box. That didn't work, as the freezing occurred again tonight. After talking with Dell again this evening, another tech told me that there must be a faulty wiring (he said that all my software is OK and that my IP is correct, etc, that there isn't anything wrong with my system) it must be a tiny glitch occuring in the "external hardware" that when I bump into the desk, it disrupts something... I'm very confused and frustrated... I also spoke with Verizon (I have DSL through them) and they told me that it probably is Spyware. This machine is brand new, I haven't gone many places, I have hardly done anything with it... How can it be a virus or spyware?? And besides, wouldn't that have been taken care of with the whole restoring of the computer back to it's original form?? AHH! Since nobody can really tell me WHY, I came here to seek any kind of assistance a kind, pc-savvy person can give me! I feel I have a bad machine. I don't know what to do, should I return it?! Is that even an option? I've also had Verizon reinstall my DSL twice to see if that was the problem, I have had the phone line checked... Everybody said everything is OK. The desk isn't nudging any of the wires to my knowledge and all the wires are plugged into the right spots, tightly. I also have kept the area dust free, and the tower fan is not blocked. I'm LOST!!! PLEASE, if anyone out there has any clue or any insight, it would be MUCH appreciated!! Thank you!!

If you're machine is just two weeks old I would take it back and tell them to fix it or replace it. You most likely have loose wiring or bad componets. Don't take no for an answer
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.
